The San Diego Padres may have disappointed this season, but at least they were able to finish their season on a high note, winning 3-1 over the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday afternoon at Petco Park.
In the final home game of the Padres’ underwhelming season, the club kicked things off in the bottom of the third when Yangervis Solarte slugged a long two-run home run to right field off Taylor Jungmann, giving the Padres the game’s first score and first lead.
The Padres added another one immediately afterwards in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Cory Spangenberg drove in Derek Norris with an RBI single to right field that made the game 3-0. The run was charged to Jungmann, though by then the rookie had been removed from the game in favor of reliever Kyle Lohse.
Ian Kennedy, the Padres’ starter, cruised for much of the game on Thursday, only getting into trouble in the top of the sixth inning when he allowed a solo home run to Shane Peterson that made the game 3-1. But Milwaukee couldn’t do much better off him after that, and Kennedy’s final line was a dominant six innings, five hits, one run — with no walks — and 11 strikeouts, leaving the game leading and in line for a win.
Of note for the Padres in the game was Wil Myers, who left in the middle innings after injuring his wrist on a foul pop-up down the right field line. His status was not known by the end of the game, unfortunately.
Joaquin Benoit and Craig Kimbrel closed down the game for the Padres, who improved with the win to 74-85 on the season with now three games left to play.
The Padres are now done with the home portion of their 2015 schedule; they will finish off their season with three games in Los Angeles against the NL West-champion Dodgers beginning Friday night at 7:10 pm PT.
