Recap: Padres 14 Rockies 3

The Padres were on to face the division rival Colorado Rockies following a series win over the Chicago Cubs. Odrismaer Despainge was on the mound for the Padres making what could be his last start before heading back to the bullpen, with Ian Kennedy on his rehab stint. Jorge De La Rosa would be on the mound for Colorado. De La Rosa was making his first start of the season after starting the year on the Disabled List with a groin injury.

San Diego got started quick with four straight hits including two doubles and two runs before recording an out. From there Jedd Gyorko and Yonder Alonso would knock home 3 more runs and the Padres would find themselves up 5-0 after 1 inning.

It would be more of the same in the second inning, Wil Myers reached on an error by Troy Tulowitzki, following a Derek Norris single, Matt Kemp singled to left field scoring Myers. Justin Upton struck out then Will Middlebrooks tripled to left center field to clear the bases. Yonder Alonso drove in Middlebrooks a batter later with a sacrifice fly to left field and give the Padres a 9-0 lead. This spelled the end of the day for De La Rosa who allowed 7 earned runs in 2.0 innings of work.

Pitcher Odrisamer Despaingne joined the hit parade in the 3rd inning for his first career base hit, all 9 Padres starters had at least one hit on the evening.

In the 4th, after Tulowitzki singled to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a ground-out, then came into score on a Justin Morneau single to get the Rockies on the scoreboard. Rafael Ynoa singled later on in the inning driving home Morneau and inching Colorado back into the game.

The knockout punch was delivered in the 5th as the Padres would scratch across 5 more runs capped off by a two-run home run to right field off the bat of Will Venable.

Despaigne pitched 6.2 innings allowing 2 earned runs and striking out 5.

Derek Norris supplied 3 hits to the potent Padres offense, but Matt Kemp was the star on this day going 3-4 with 4 RBI. Yonder Alonso also drove in 3. The Padres continued their great hitting with runners in scoring position, going 9-12 in such situations in tonight’s contest.

Offensively for Colorado, DJ LaMahieu went 1-4. LaMahieu is currently second in Major League Baseball with a .463 average. Former Padres catcher Nick Hundley went 2-3.

The Padres improved to 9-5 on the season and have won 8 of their last 10 games. Colorado lost their fourth in a row and are now 7-6. These two teams are back in action tomorrow at 5:40, with Brandon Morrow (0-0, 1.29) on the mound for San Diego being opposed by former San Diego Prep pitcher Tyler Matzek (1-0, 1.80).
