RECAP: Padres 10, Rockies 3

The visiting San Diego Padres exploded for ten runs on fourteen hits and defeated the Colorado Rockies 10-3 on Wednesday afternoon in Cactus League action.

Thirteen different Padres recorded hits on the afternoon, with only Carlos Quentin having a multi-hit game, but timely at-bats and a big eighth inning that included a pinch-hit grand slam home run put the game out of reach of the Rockies, who have now been blown out on two consecutive spring days.

Tyson Ross started for the Padres and allowed three runs on three hits and a walk in 3.2 innings, while striking out five hitters.

Rockies outfielder Drew Stubbs hit a solo home run off Ross in the bottom half of the inning to give the Rockies, who had been held to no runs and two hits the day before against the Angels, an early 1-0 lead.

The Padres answered in the top of the third off Rockies starter Tyler Matzek when Wil Myers doubled to bring home Clint Barmes, and Yangervis Solarte followed with a single to score Myers and push the Padres to a 2-1 lead.

That particular lead would be short-lived, however, as the Rockies scored once again with the help of Stubbs, who singled home Charlie Blackmon. Stubbs then came around to score the Rockies third run on a Nolan Arenado single off Ross, and Colorado took back a 3-2 lead.

The game held that way until the top of the sixth when the Padres tied it up at 3-3 after Will Middlebrooks drove in Cory Spangenberg on a ground ball single off Rockies reliever Jair Jurrjens.

In the top of the seventh, with John Lannan pitching, the Padres took the lead for good, when Spangenberg singled to score Tommy Medica and Yangervis Solarte and put the Friars up 5-3.

The game blew wide open in the top of the eighth off Rockies prospect reliever Scott Oberg, when Brett Wallace singled with the bases loaded to score Jake Goebbert. The next hitter, Cody Decker, hit a pinch-hit grand slam home run to put the Padres up by seven runs.

Following Ross on the mound, Shawn Kelley, Brandon Maurer, Nick Vincent and Frank Garces logged scoreless outings, combining to allow just three hits and two walks against four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.

Jose Valverde, hoping to make the team as a non-roster invitee, pitched a perfect ninth inning for the Padres, to cap the solid day by the relief corps.

The Rockies, who yesterday lost 11-0 to the Angels and managed just two hits, were held in check again today by the Padres, recording only six hits the entire game.

The Padres are off tomorrow, and return to action Friday night, March 20th, against the Kansas City Royals at 7:05 pm PDT.
