Recap: Nationals 8, Padres, 3

The Washington Nationals (63-61) were able to win game one against the San Diego Padres (61-64) in Nationals Park, Washington D.C. This game was headlined by two very good starting pitchers.
Nationals starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg (8-6, 4.14 ERA, 6.0 IP, 7 K’s, 2 Hits, 2 ER) (W) faced San Diego Padres ace James Shields (9-6, 3.89 ERA, 5.2 IP, 2 K’s, 8 Hits, 5 ER) (L) as runs were scored in the second inning.
In the top of the second inning Padres second baseman Jedd Gyorko (2-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI) hit a two-run home run to left field. The Nationals responded as catcher Wilson Ramos (1-3, R, HR, 2 RBI) hit a two-run home run to tie the game at 2-2.
During the bottom of the third inning Washington regained the lead. Third baseman Yunel Escobar (2-3, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB) hit an RBI double to left field as Anthony Rendon (2-5, 2 R) scored.
As the game continued in the bottom of the fifth inning, Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond (2-4, RBI) extended their lead. Desmond hit an RBI double as Bryce Harper (1-4, 2 R, BB) scored it was 4-2 Washington.
In the bottom of the seventh inning Washington’s first baseman Jordan Zimmerman (1-5, R HR, 4 RBI) sealed the deal. Zimmerman hit a grand slam to right center field as the Nationals lead 8-2.
Jedd Gyorko hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot to left center field. The final score was 8-3 Washington. Game two will begin today at 4:05 PM PT.
San Diego Padres starter Tyson Ross (8-9, 3.32 ERA) will face Washington Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez (9-6, 3.98 ERA)
