Recap: Marlins 4 – Padres 0

The Miami Marlins definitely took control of the Padres last night as they beat them 4-0 at home.

The game came to a close with five singles in the sixth inning. Tyson Ross started for the Padres and MLB.com described his game as being, “sharp early, striking out seven in the first three innings. But he ran into trouble in the sixth when the Marlins scored four runs — getting five consecutive two-out singles.”

Ross took full advantage of his slider last night. MLB.com reports,

“Ross struck out seven hitters in the first three innings — all on sliders. In fact, he struck out the side to start the game, getting Ichiro SuzukiMartin Pradoand Christian Yelich to swing through his slider.”

“I thought he was really super the first five innings. You saw in the sixth the wild pitch and then well-placed hits, still weren’t hitting hard. The wild pitch threw him for a loop and he beat himself up over that. He’s trying to do what they’re all trying to do — showing everybody they’re a worthy team. And I think they are.” — Padres interim manager Pat Murphy

Although the Padres didn’t get the win, Ross was able to create a piece of history for franchise himself. He extended his streak of starts without a home run to 16! The old record was held by Dave Roberts in 1971, and the last time a home run was allowed by Ross was on April 28.

Tom Koehler of the Miami Marlins pitched seven shutout innings and allowed three hits and had seven strikeouts. Marlins manager Dan Jennings was impressed with Koehler’s performance on Thursday night.

Up next the San Diego Padres will take on the Marlins again tonight at 7:10 pm PST.
