After two easy games in Denver, the Los Angeles Angels’ road trip continued in Seattle Thursday night, but the host Mariners weren’t as kind to the Halos as the Rockies had been, and shut down LA’s offense in a 7-2 M’s victory.
The Mariners jumped on Angels’ starter Garrett Richards, getting 12 hits in just 5.2 innings, scoring four runs while Richards walked one and struck out just three hitters. Richards threw 61 strikes of his 95 pitches, but left losing 4-0 in the sixth inning.
Richards’ counterpart, Mariners’ starter Felix Hernandez, threw seven lights out innings, shutting out Los Angeles and allowing just five hits and two walks, while striking out six Halo hitters. Hernandez threw 72 strikes of his 104 pitches.
The Angels finally got on the board after Hernandez left, with a Kole Calhoun solo home run to make the game 4-1, though it wouldn’t last like that for long.
The Mariners pushed across three more runs in the bottom of the eighth off Angels’ relievers, thanks to three consecutive RBI singles that made the game effectively out of reach at 7-1 after eight full frames.
The Angels wouldn’t get much closer, only managing an insurance run in the ninth inning on a fielder’s choice, and the game ended 7-2 with Los Angeles going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and leaving six runners on base, while the Mariners pounded out 19 hits.
The Angels and Mariners continue their series on Friday night, going through the weekend before the All Star break begins on Monday.
