RECAP: Mariners 4, Angels 1

The Los Angeles Angels opened up the 2015 season in Seattle against the Mariners Monday afternoon, and never got going with the bats, dropping a 4-1 decision on Opening Day.

Felix Hernandez (1-0) threw a two-hitter across seven innings, while allowing only one run and one walk, and striking out ten Angels batters.

The one run he gave up was a solo home run by Mike Trout in the top of the first inning to give the Angels a 1-0 lead. Other than that, though, Hernandez threw lights-out baseball and the Angels struggled, striking out twelve times total on the day.

On the mound, Jered Weaver (0-1) allowed four runs on eight hits across six innings, and while he didn’t walk anyone, he only struck out one. He threw 90 pitches (54 strikes) in his first loss of the season.

Weaver also allowed a solo home run, this one to Dustin Ackley in the fifth inning with the Mariners already up 2-1.

Cesar Ramos and Fernando Salas tossed scoreless frames for the Halos after Weaver’s six innings of work.

At the plate, the Angels did virtually nothing, with only Trout, Erick Aybar, Chris Iannetta and Johnny Giavotella recording hits. Only Trout’s hit was more than a single.

Additionally, Trout led the way with strikeouts in his other three at-bats. Kole Calhoun, Matt Joyce and David Freese were all 0-for-4 with two strikeouts each, as well.

The Angels and Mariners will play again tomorrow night in-game two of their three-game series to open the season.
