RECAP: Late Homer Sinks The Padres, 5-3

The San Diego Padres lose a very tough game against the Miami Marlins in the final game of the series, 5-3.

In a great pitching match up between Jose Fernandez,(4-0), of Miami and the Padres James Shields,(8-4), the fans were in for a real treat by both pitchers. Miami’s Fernandez, held the Padres scoreless for the full six innings that he pitched, striking out 10 Padres batters on 112 pitches. Shields, managed to only give up two runs, in the bottom of the first, on a double by Marlins second baseman Miguel Rojas, that scored Ichiro Suzuki. Several batters later, the Marlins got another run, on a sac-fly off the bat of Derek Dietrich.

The pitching battle continued after both starters had exited the game in the sixth inning. The Padres got on the scoreboard, in their last chance in the top of the ninth inning, when shortstop Alezi Amarista blasted a two run shot to right field, that scored Derek Norris, tying the game at two apiece.

One very key play in this game, was in the bottom of the sixth inning, on a grounder off the bat of Marlins Justin Bour, to first baseman Yonder Alonso, who fired a strike home to catcher Derek Norris, who tagged out Christian Yelich, trying to score, that denied the Marlins their third run.

Unfortunately, the Marlins won the game in the bottom of the ninth, on two walks in the inning but the sac-bunt by Cole Gillespi, who later stole second base and a full count walk to Jeff Mathis, set up the game winning homer,to center field, by Adeiny Hechavarria, that gave the Marlins the 5-3 victory.

Brandon Maurer,(7-4), took the loss for the Padres and A.J. Ramos,(1-3), got his first win of the season for the Marlins in relief. The Padres,(51-54), brief four game winning is over, the team now will travel to Milwaukee for a four game set with the Brewers. Tyson Ross,(7-8, 3.38 ERA), will take the hill, he will be opposed by the Brewers,(44-62), Wily Peralta,(2-5, 3.90 ERA), in the first game.

San Diego remains in third place, 8.5 games behind the first place Los Angeles Dodgers, in the National League West. Miami,(43-62), with the win, is still in fourth place, 12.5 games behind the first place Washington Nationals, in the National League East.
