The San Diego Padres kept it close for a while, but eventually the San Francisco Giants pulled away, winning 7-1 on Wednesday afternoon in the final game of their three-game series at Petco Park.
The Padres scored their first — and only — run in the bottom of the second inning when Jedd Gyorko hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.
The Giants got a run back in the sixth inning when Brandon Belt slammed a solo home run off Marcos Mateo, tying the game at a run apiece.
Before that homer, though, Padres starter James Shields had been lights out on the mound, throwing five scoreless innings while allowing three hits and three walks and striking out seven Giants’ hitters before giving way to the bullpen.
The Padres bullpen was bad on Wednesday afternoon, too; after the game was tied at 1-1 heading into the seventh inning, the Giants put up six runs on the Padres bullpen in the next two frames, highlighted by a two-run Buster Posey double in the seventh, and a Brandon Crawford solo home run in the eighth.
All told, the Giants took a 1-1 game and made in 7-1 in the space of less than two full innings, and Brandon Maurer (6-3) took the loss for the Padres, who fell to 44-51 after the game.
