The San Francisco Giants scored the first 7 runs of the game, and never looked back despite a furious late rally by the San Diego Padres, holding on to win 13-8 at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Thursday afternoon.
After entering June undefeated, James Shields (7-2) took his second loss for the Padres, lasting just four innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits and two walks, while striking out seven Giants’ batters.
The Giants never stopped on offense, though, putting up at least two runs in five of their eight turns at bat on Thursday. The club hit four triples in the game, the first time they’ve done that since 1960.
It started in the bottom of the first, when Joe Panik hit an RBI single, followed up by Brandon Belt‘s RBI triple to put San Francisco in command early.
The Padres, on the other hand, couldn’t figure out Chris Heston, who ended up going seven innings and allowing just two runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out six Friars and winning his eighth decision of the year.
In the fourth and fifth innings combined, the Padres were singled to death; the Giants scored five runs across the two innings, all on RBI singles, against Shields and reliever Frank Garces.
That put the Giants up 7-0 and in command, though later in the game after Heston was removed, the Padres would get a six-run eighth inning, which included an RBI double from Clint Barmes and a two-run home run from Matt Kemp.
The inning was a furious and sustained rally, bringing the Padres to a 9-8 deficit, but it wasn’t enough, as the Giants held the Padres off well enough and then scored four more runs in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Brandon Maurer to go back up 13-8.
The Padres will host the Arizona Diamondbacks beginning Friday night in a series important to their NL West hopes, as the Friars now find themselves at 35-40 after going 3-7 in their last ten games.
