Recap: Giants 1 Padres 0

The Padres would kick off the home portion of their schedule welcoming the rival San Francisco Giants to beautiful Petco Park. The pitching match-up would be Ian Kennedy vs. Tim Hudson.

Justin Upton would double to lead off the second inning then advance to 3rd base when Yonder Alonso walked on a wild pitch. In what would become a theme for the game, Jedd Gyorko would ground into an inning ending to double play.

Ian Kennedy would leave the game in the third inning with what would later be diagnosed as a hamstring strain. Odrisamer Despaigne would be pressed into emergency relief for the Padres.

The Padres would threaten again in the 5th inning with back-to-back singles by Will Middlebrooks and Yonder Alonso to start off the inning. Gyorko would ground into another double play, then Hudson would get Despaigne to the ground out to avoid any damage.

Despaigne was lights-out in relief tossing 4.2 innings of no hit ball.

The bottom of the 7th would begin with Alonso reaching base on a walk. Gyorko would pop out to second base. Alexi Amarista then deposited a single into left field and Alonso would race to third. Yangervis Solarte would continue the trend and bounce into yet another inning ending double play.

No Despaigne was a welcome sight for the Giant hitters as Joaquin Benoit would come in for the 8th. Gregor Blanco would lead off with a single and advance to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt. Matt Duffy would reach base on a walk. Nori Aoki would fly out to Matt Kemp and both runners would tag up. Benoit would get Joe Panik to pop out and escape the jam.

Craig Kimbrel would come on in the 9th to make his home debut as a Padre. Following some jawing back and forth between Angel Pagan and Derek Norris, both benches were warned. Pagan tripled and the Giants seemed destined to finally scratch a run across. Buster Posey walked, then Brandon Crawford popped out to Amarista. With Casey McGehee up, Kimbrel would induce a double play ball to end the inning.

Upton led off the 9th with a hot smash the McGehee wasn’t able to corral at third. Following a Middlebrooks strikeout Alonso grounded into a fielders choice advancing Upton to second. Next up Gyorko would reach base on an infield single and move Upton 90 feet closer to scoring. Pinch hitter Clint Barmes grounded out to send the game to extra inning for the first time in 2015.

In the 10th, Wil Myers reached base on a throwing error by McGehee. Derek Norris followed that up with a single. Kemp would reach on a fielders choice. With another chance to win the game Upton flew out to right field to end the inning.

With one out in the 12th Brandon Crawford hit a blooper that would fall into no mans land. Pinch hitter Justin Maxwell drove a pitch into center field to score Crawford and give the Giants the lead 1-0. Nick Vincent would get Duffy to fly out and end the inning.

George Kontos came on in relief to earn the win and Nick Vincent was hung with the loss.

The Padres are back in action tomorrow at 7:10. Brandon Morrow is on the mound the Padres and he will be opposed by Tim Lincecum.
