The Los Angeles Dodgers open their weekend series in Miami and grab a 7-1 victory.
Dodgers starter Brett Anderson (4-4), was magnificent in his performance, pitching seven strong innings and for the third time in his career, he recorded 10 strikeouts, which is a career high for Anderson. Andreson also helped his own cause by collecting a hit, in three plate appearances and driving in one of the Dodgers seven runs. The game was over shadowed by the injury suffered by Giancarlo Stanton, who is currently leading the Major Leagues in Home Runs and RBI’s. The injury will sideline Stanton for 4 to 6 weeks, he has a broken hamate bone in his left wrist.
Andy Van Slyke was filling in for the injured Yasiel Puig in right field and he delivered with a monster home run to left field, in the second inning off of Miami starter Justin Nicolino (1-1). Miami’s only run was scored in the bottom of the first inning, on a ground out by Adeiny Hechavarria that scored former Dodger Dee Gordon. Dodgers second baseman Howie Kendrick lead the Dodgers, going 4 for 5, as the team out slugged the Marlins 13-6 in the hits department.
The loss for Miami(30-45), was their fifth straight and they now have dropped the first game in three straight series. Miami is now in fourth place in the National League East, 11.5 games behind the first place Washington Nationals. Los Angeles(42-33) has now won four games in a row and still have a 2.0 game lead over the San Francisco Giants, in the National League West. Dodger ace, Clayton Kershaw (5-5, 3.33 ERA) will take the mound against the Marlins Tom Koehler (5-4, 3.76 ERA), in the second game of the series.
