Recap: Dodgers 7, Padres 0, The Kenta Maeda Show Makes Its First Stop in San Diego

Last night the Dodgers became the first team since Bob Gibson‘s 1963 St. Louis Cardinals to start the season with three straight shutouts. They also scored a total of 25 runs over those 3 games, just incredible.

Kenta Maeda looked great tonight going 6 innings, giving up 5 hits, 4 strikeouts, no walks, and having an astounding 12-2 groundball to flyball ratio. No one knew what to expect of Maeda, most projections had him pegged as a #4 starter with a #3’s ceiling but he looked every bit as good tonight against Major League hitters as he did against Japanese hitters while winning two Eiji Sawamura Award, Nippon Professional Baseball’s equivalent of the Cy Young award. Maeda also hit not only his first home-run but also the Dodgers first home-run of the year, with Yasiel Puig adding the second 4 innings later.

The hit parade also continued as the Dodgers racked up 11 hits, the only Dodger starters without a hit were Adrian Gonzalez, who walked 3 times, and A.J. Ellis who went 0-4.

After Maeda came out, the bullpen came in with Yimi Garcia to start the 7th, J.P. Howell in the 8th and Joe Blanton to finish it off in the 9th. In total the bullpen 37 pitches, gave up 0 hits, 0 walks and struck out 3 in 3 innings of work.

Next up is the rival San Francisco Giants in San Francisco.
