The Los Angeles Dodgers slugged three home runs to break a 2-2 tie with four runs in the eighth inning off reliever Nick Masset, and sent the Atlanta Braves home Monday evening with a 6-3 loss in the first game of their mid-week series at Dodger Stadium.
Brett Anderson started for the Dodgers, and was masterful, allowing just two runs on seven hits across seven innings, while striking out three hitters. He walked two Braves’ batters, throwing exactly 60 of his 100 pitches for strikes.
However, Anderson wouldn’t factor into the decision, and left the game in a 2-2 tie entering the eighth inning, thanks to Braves’ starter Williams Perez who allowed just one run to the Dodgers’ offense over six innings.
The boys in blue got to the Braves’ relief corps, scoring one-off Luis Avilan in the seventh, before exploding for four runs to blow the game open off Masset in the eighth.
The home runs – hit by Andre Ethier, Alex Guerrero, and Jimmy Rollins – stood up as Kenley Jansen picked up his fourth save, remaining perfect on the season. Jansen initially had the day off, but came in after Chris Hatcher allowed two hits and a run to start the ninth.
Aside from the three home run hitters, Adrian Gonzalez (2-for-5) and Joc Pederson (3-for-5) led the way for the Dodgers Monday afternoon in the Memorial Day game.
Tonight, the two clubs meet again in Los Angeles, as the Dodgers attempt to maintain their lead in the National League West. At 22-22, the Braves are now .500 after a surprisingly solid start in the NL East.
