Recap: Dodgers 5, Padres 1 – Still Hot

Brett Anderson threw 95 pitches before coming out suddenly after 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th inning. We were later to learn that he had left the game with a left leg cramp and if you’ve ever had a cramp, you can’t blame him. Luckily the Dodgers bullpen pitched well again over the rest of the 3 and a third innings, blanking the Padres and earning Anderson his 9th win of the season.

Offensively it was a weird game for the Dodgers, the umpire’s strike zone was inconsistent, especially on the corners and that helped to produce a lot of walks, with the Dodgers getting 7 walks and also getting 7 hits. Now you might look at the 5 runs and think that they did well with runners in scoring position but then you would be wrong.

For the game, the Dodgers were 3 for 16 with men in scoring position and 3 of those 5 runs came on an error. In the 7th inning with the bases loaded, Andre Ethier got a pitch and hit a ball that did even get past the pitcher’s mound, San Diego Padres pitcher Nick Vincent fielded the ball with plenty of time to get Ethier and get the final out of the inning but when he got up to throw the ball, he threw it high and to the right of Wil Myers (another major leaguer missing a letter to his first name, ala Mat Latos) who just switched from Center Field to First Base and that allowed all 3 runners scored and Either winding up on third and that would be all the runs the Dodgers would need.

In fun news, Corey Seager got his first major league stolen base on a botched hit and run, looking faster than I thought.

JP Howell, Luis Avilan (I like to say it like Feliz Navidad from Jose Feliciano’s Feliz Navidad, Lu-is, Av-i-lan), Yimi Garcia and Pedro Baez, now sporting a 98 mph 4 seam fastball, shut down the Padres and now the Dodgers will go to Anaheim to play the Anaheim Angels, er Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (sigh).

The Dodgers have now won 11 of their last 13 games, and will now play two against the Angels who are fighting for the second wildcard in the American League, unfortunately for them they get Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw and fortunately for them they will get Mat Latos.

The Dodgers lead San Diego 78- 58 with 26 games to go and stay 7.5 games up on the Giants, who after getting beat up in their first game with the Rockies, won their next two.

See you in Anaheim.
