Recap: Dodgers 5, Mets 6 – Mets, Baez Spoil Urias’ Debut
- Updated: May 28, 2016
That didn’t at all go the way I hoped for the Dodgers.
There was so much excitement around Julio Urias‘ debut that I think we all forgot he’s just 19, he’s going to make mistakes, get nervous, get anxious and because he was on a limit of 80-90 pitches we didn’t get to see him for more than three innings.
Urias started off well enough, getting Curtis Granderson to strikeout looking, giving up a double to the next Met up Asdrubal Cabrera and allowing him to get to third by throwing a wild pitch and getting David Wright to strikeout. That’s 2 strikeouts in the first inning, 2 outs, no runs so far so good.
Unfortunately that’s when things started to unravel for Urias, he seemed to have gotten anxious to get that third out, started overthrowing and couldn’t find the strike zone. First he walked Yoenis Céspedes then Neil Walker doubled and after that Juan Lagares singled and before we know it the Mets have put three runs on the board. The next batter singled but Urias was able to finally get out of the inning by getting Eric Campbell to line out to left and we’re done.
The 2nd inning went a lot better for Urias, he got another strikeout but only allowed one batter to get on base via a walk to Granderson and was able to end the inning by getting the next out on fly’s to the outfield.
It was the 3rd inning that sealed his fate unfortunately. He started it off great though, he was able to get the first two batters out with a flyout and a handling a groundball up the middle himself but again he got anxious to get out the inning he couldn’t find the strike zone. So after Lagares singled to left and walked the bases loaded he was at 81 pitches, was done even though the opposing pitcher Jacob deGrom was up, Chris Hatcher came in for him and struck out deGrom to get out the inning.
So that was Urias’ debut, 2.2 innings, 3 strikeouts, 4 walks, 5 hits and 3 earned runs on 81 pitches and only 42 for strikes. There was a lot ot be said about the umpire’s zone, especially pitching in New York and him being a rookie pitcher and all but let’s just chalk it up to lessons learned. Every time Urias has moved up in his career it has taken him a few games to get acclimated to the new hitters and then he goes out and looks like himself again so I’m not too disappointed but I would’ve liked him to get out that inning, especially considering the last batter was the opposing pitcher.
On the offense side it was well offensive. In the top of the 3rd they loaded the bases with 0 outs and were only able to get a single run out of it via a sacrifice fly and after that they were stymied and it felt like the outcome of this game was a foregone conclusion, especially when the Mets closer Jeurys Familia came on, I’m sure most Dodger fans remember this guy from last year when he pretty much owned us, I expected us to go down in 3 quick outs but the team had different plans.
After Familia gave up a single to Adrian Gonzalez to left a funny thing happened, Howie Kendrick hit a squibber down the left field line and David Wright knowing he wouldn’t have a play let it roll until it reached the bag hoping it would go foul but it didn’t and now we have two men on with no outs in the inning.
Joc Pederson was the next batter and he struck out for the third time that day *groan* the next hitter is Yasiel Puig and he singles to left with Wright playing close to the 3rd baseline for some reason yes! And now we have the bases loaded with 1 out and we’ve seen this before right? So I’m not too excited but hey there’s hope, you never know! Oh look Yasmani Grandal has walked and now it’s 5-2, what? Ok, Trayce Thompson let’s go Dodgers, let’s go…Thompson strikes out. Guess he’s not as clutch as his brother. Ok Chase Utley, let’s get this over with so I can go in the house as I’m listening to the game on the radio and just sitting there with the car off and getting more and more anxious. Utley sure takes a long time to get into the box doesn’t he, first pitch double to deep right yeah!!!!
After that Corey Seager strikes out but hey it’s 5-5, it’s a new game, Pedro Baez comes in and oh, oh no…
What a Grand Walk-Off it was! 🍎https://t.co/YrrsCcjjfp
