Scott Schebler’s eighth-inning solo home run allowed the Dodgers to salvage a 2-2 tie with the Colorado Rockies Tuesday afternoon despite little offense from both clubs in this Cactus League affair.
Schebler clubbed his solo home run to right center field in the eighth off reliever Jason Gurka to tie the game, 2-2. In a half inning where big leaguers Adrian Gonzalez (ground out) and Alex Guerrero and Erisbel Arruebarrena (strikeouts) went down quickly, the Dodgers needed minor leaguer Schebler’s timely power.
In the ninth, facing Rockies minor leaguer Scott Oberg, with one out and a man on first, Matt Carson struck out looking and – on the same pitch – catcher Dustin Garneau threw out Buck Britton attempting to steal second base, snuffing out the Dodgers’ rally in the ninth and ending the game in a tie.
Clayton Kershaw started for the Dodgers for the second time this spring and had a strong outing, lasting three innings and allowing a run on three hits, a walk, and two strikeouts. He made one bad pitch, a third inning offering to Rockies catcher Nick Hundley that landed beyond the left field fence to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Colorado scored another run when Kyle Parker was driven in on a Ryan Casteel single off Dodgers reliever Dustin McGowan.
Rockies starter and top prospect Eddie Butler, who walked one and struck out three, held the Dodgers hitless in three innings, ending his day with a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, though, the Dodgers answered while facing Jhoulys Chacin, a right-hander who will start the season in the Rockies rotation. Andre Ethier hit a sharp infield single off first baseman Matt McBride’s glove that scored Justin Turner and closed the gap to 2-1.
The 2-1 score held until the eighth, although the Dodgers threatened with two baserunners in the sixth off Christian Friedrich, and the bases loaded in the seventh off Jorge Rondon. However, back-to-back strikeouts by Matt Carson and O’Koyea Dickson with the bases juiced in the seventh killed the rally and preserved the 2-1 lead for Colorado entering the eighth inning.
Besides Hundley and Schebler’s home runs, neither team did much by way of offense combining for just 12 hits, including just four extra base hits, in the pitcher-friendly affair.
On the mound following Kershaw, McGowan allowed one run in his inning of relief in the fourth, Joe Wieland threw two scoreless innings, and David Aardsma tossed a scoreless inning in the seventh, and Paco Rodriguez struck out the side in the eighth to preserve the 2-1 game and keep the Dodgers close for Schebler’s home run in the bottom half of the inning. Pedro Baez threw a perfect ninth inning.
The Dodgers return to action tomorrow on the road at 1:05 pm PDT against the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs have yet to win a game this spring.
