RECAP: Diamondbacks 7, Angels 2

The Arizona Diamondbacks took advantage of poor defense early on by the Los Angeles Angels and jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings, en route to a 7-2 victory Friday afternoon in Tempe, Arizona in Cactus League play.

Making just his third start of the spring, and his second since he was shut down March 7th after tweaking his left knee during pitcher fielding practice, C.J. Wilson was the victim of traffic on the basepaths and bad defense early Friday.

After allowing a double and a walk in the first inning but escaping unscathed, the second inning blew up for the Angels, who made two errors and allowed five runs (only one earned).

The trouble began with an infield single by Nick Evans, followed by Wilson walking Jordan Pacheco to put two on with no out. Then, Tuffy Gosewich hit a ground ball to short that was booted by Erick Aybar, and with the bases loaded Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock brought home two runs on a single to give Arizona a 2-1 lead.

After a groundout scored a third run, Mark Trumbo doubled to bring home Pollock, and Cuban newcomer Yasmany Tomas singled to bring home Trumbo, making the score 5-1 in favor of the Diamondbacks and extending the second inning against Wilson. For good measure, Aaron Hill, the ninth hitter to bat in the inning, reached on an error by Kyle Kubitza and Evans, batting around, finally grounded out to Kubitza to end the damage.

Wilson settled down and ended up going 4.1 innings, allowing nine hits and two walks. The only damage he allowed was the five-run second inning, and only one of those runs was charged to him due to poor defense behind him.

The Angels bats never got going Friday afternoon, though, and couldn’t make up the difference of the big second inning by Arizona. Archie Bradley, the Diamondbacks starter, lasted five innings and allowed just one run on six hits and a walk, while striking out two.

In the top of the seventh with Angels reliever Joe Smith pitching, the Diamondbacks struck again. This time, Evans doubled to lead off, followed by an RBI single by Pacheco bringing Evans home, and then a triple by Nick Buss to score Pacheco, making it a 7-1 game in favor of the D-backs.

In the bottom of the eighth, Angels minor leaguer Roberto Baldoquin slugged a pinch-hit home run off hurler Randall Delgado to make the score 7-2, but that’s as close as the Angels would get.

After Wilson and in between Smith’s outing, Huston Street and Cesar Ramos tossed scoreless innings in relief for the Angels.

The Angels continue their Spring Training slate on Saturday afternoon hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Sunday afternoon hosting the Cincinnati Reds. After Friday’s game, only eight Spring Training games remain before Opening Day in Seattle, against the Mariners, on April 6th.
