RECAP: Diamondbacks 4 Padres 2
- Updated: September 28, 2015
The Padres struggled again yesterday as they lost the the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2. The Padres interim manager had the following to say about their performance:
Give credit to the Diamondbacks. They pitched very well today, they hit in the clutch and that wins ballgames. When you only get five hits, you’ve got to have some clutch hits if you’re only going to get five.
James Shields also found it hard to get his footing on the game, as it has been for much of the season. When asked about it, he said:
I’m not going to give up that many homers next year; I’m not worried about it, he said, whose 33 homers are tied for fourth in franchise history with Ian Kennedy; Kevin Jarvis and Bobby Jones both set the franchise record with 37 in 2001. I’m not worried about my home runs. Most of my home runs are solo. I’m not going to walk that many guys next year, either. I normally don’t walk guys like that.
It’s uncharacteristic of myself.
He has a history of giving up home runs, as he released a career-high 34 homers with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2010. While 26 came with the bases empty, Shields has allowed three or more homers in a game four times this season.
Definitely could be better, no doubt about it, said Shields, who threw 109 pitches (63 strikes) and ranks second in the majors behind Justin Verlander with 30,805 pitches since 2007. I go out there every five days and pitch with my heart out on my sleeve. I go out there and post every single game.
I’m going to be a bulldog. Iâm hoping for better things next year.
The Padres were 2-for-6 with their runners in position to score and stranded seven, including three when Shields struck out with the bases loaded which was the closing of the second inning.
The game ended 4-2 in favor of the Diamondbacks. The Padres will resume play on Tuesday, September 29 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
