Joe Wieland earned a start Wednesday for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and five batters into the game, it was all over as the Milwaukee Brewers jumped on Wieland with two home runs early and never looked back, winning 6-3 at Miller Park.
The Brewers jumped all over Dodgers starter Joe Wieland in the first inning, scoring five runs thanks to two home runs and pushing a big lead to start the game behind their starting pitcher, Wily Peralta.
The Brewers’ offensive onslaught started with a two-run home run from Scooter Gennett exactly two hitters into the game, scoring Carlos Gomez as well.
Then, after Ryan Braun walked, Adam Lind hit another two-run home run, and the Brewers had four runs before Wieland could record an out in the inning.
Later in that half inning, Martin Maldonado singled home Jean Segura, to give the Brewers a five-spot at Miller Park after just one full frame.
Wieland would settle down, though, and the Dodgers bounced back in the fourth, when Andre Ethier singled home Justin Turner, and again in the fifth when Joc Pederson hit a solo home run off Peralta.
Those two runs made it 5-2, which was as close as the Dodgers would get as Sergio Santos walked Jean Segura with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 6-2 lead for the Brewers.
The Dodgers tacked one more run on in the top of the eighth, when Pederson homered again, this time to center field, to make it a 6-3 game off Peralta, who was still in the game for Milwaukee.
Francisco Rodriguez closed the game out for the Brewers in the ninth, striking out Scott Van Slyke with Adrian Gonzalez on second to end the game and send the Dodgers their second loss in the three games thus far in Milwaukee.
Pederson’s two solo shots led the way for the Dodgers, and Gonzalez’s three hits in four at-bats paced the club, despite the fact that Gonzo wasn’t able to drive anyone in, or score, despite reaching safely three times.
After his awful first inning, Wieland settled down, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks over 4.2 innings pitched, but the hole he dug was too much for the Dodgers to overcome.
The Dodgers and Brewers will play the final game of the series Thursday morning at 10:40 am PT with a chance to split the four-game series, before the boys in blue head to Denver to take on the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
The Rockies have lost seven in a row after being swept in a doubleheader on Wednesday, and 13 of their last 17, so the Dodgers are coming to Coors Field at the right time.
