The Milwaukee Brewers got to Andrew Cashner for five runs in the sixth inning, and Milwaukee rookie Zach Davies was brilliant on Wednesday night throwing seven scoreless frames, as the visitors won 5-0 at San Diego’s Petco Park.
All five runs the Brewers scored would come in the top of the sixth inning, after Padres’ starter Cashner had breezed through five scoreless frames to start, matched inning for inning by Davies.
But, in that fateful top of the sixth, the Brewers took advantage of walks and three RBI singles to extend a lead that would eventually run Cashner from the game before he could get the first out in that frame.
Jean Segura, Hernan Perez, and Martin Maldonado all drove in runs with RBI singles, and just as soon as he had been working scoreless frames, Cashner was out of the game, pulled in favor of Nick Vincent. (To add insult to injury, the final 2-RBI single off Maldonado’s bat came when Vincent was pitching, with both inherited runners charged to Cashner.)
The Padres’ bullpen threw fairly well after Cashner’s removal, but the story in San Diego was the complete lack of offense against Davies, who tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just five hits and two walks while striking out six batters.
After Corey Knebel tossed a scoreless eighth for Milwaukee, Tyler Thornburg came on for the ninth inning, and despite walking the first two hitters, worked out of the jam to give Milwaukee the win for the second night in a row against the Friars.
With the loss, the Padres are now 12 games under .500. They’ll wrap their series with Milwaukee tomorrow afternoon at Petco Park.
