RECAP: Athletics 5, Dodgers 2

The Oakland Athletics scored four runs in their final three turns at bat and overcame an early Dodgers’ lead, defeating Los Angeles’ beleaguered bullpen again and winning on Wednesday afternoon 5-2.

The A’s scored first in the top of the first off Dodgers’ starter Alex Wood on an RBI groundout, but Wood threw quite well for most of the afternoon, and ended up going 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on just five hits, despite walking three hitters and striking out only one.

The Dodgers would take the lead in the top of the third inning on Jimmy Rollins‘ two-run home run, which turned out to be the only scoring Los Angeles could do on the day.

Wood would then relinquish the lead, allowing a Billy Burns RBI double and then another RBI groundout by Danny Valencia that gave Oakland a 3-2 lead after six innings.

The only other scoring took place in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Jim Johnson came on and put the game out of reach for the Dodgers, giving up two hits and a walk. Two of those three would later score as inherited runners off relievers Luis Avilan and Pedro Baez, and the Dodgers never mounted any charge to get back within the game in the ninth.

All told, the Dodgers got just two hits and two walks off Jesse Chavez, who was phenomenal in eight innings of work. Drew Pomeranz got the save for Oakland.

The Dodgers were swept in the two-game series, and they will have Thursday off before going to Houston for a three-game series beginning on Friday night.
