During the long grind of a 162 game season there will be nights like tonight where it seems like absolutely nothing can go right.
The Padres having dropped 5 of their last 6 games sent Tyson Ross out on the mound to face the pitcher formerly known as Fausto Carmona, Roberto Hernandez.
From the start, Ross’s early season struggles continued as his fastball command was all over the place and his slider was biting a little too far out of the zone.
Newly acquired Evan Gattis got things started for the Astros driving a high fly ball to center field that bounced of the heel of Will Myers glove and bounced over the fence for a two-run home run.
The Padres answered back in the bottom half of the inning when Yangervis Solarte continued his hot hitting and singled home Myers to bring the Friars within 1.
Houston added a run in the 4th on a Chris Carter single, scoring Colby Rasmus from second base to push the lead to 3-1. They tacked on another one in the 5th with a force-out that scored the pitcher Hernandez from 3rd, credit the RBI to George Springer.
Wil Myers answered back with a mammoth shot that landed in the visitors bullpen. The home run traveled an estimated 445 feet and brought San Diego to only a 4-2 deficit.
Ross failed to pitch past the 5th inning for the second consecutive start, his final line was 5.0 innings giving up 4 earned runs while quietly striking out 9 Astros.
Carter hurt the Padres again in the 6th with a line drive home run to left field off of Odrisamer Despaigne. Jose Altuve then scored on a wild pitch extending the lead to 6-2.
There was no shortage of power on this night, in the bottom of the 6th Justin Upton hammered a ball to left field for his sixth home run of the season.
Springer was back up in the 7th looking to do more damage and that is exactly what he did, launching a two-run home run off of the Western Metal Supply Co. Building in left field.
He still wasn’t done added a two-RBI single in the top of the 8th to cap off a 5-RBI game for the young outfielder.
A Jason Castro sacrifice fly, along with RBI doubles by Altuve, Luis Valbuena and Jake Marisnick capped off an impressive offensive onslaught and finishing off the game by a score of 14-3.
Roberto Hernandez got the win for the Astros pitching 6 innings allowing three runs and striking out six, grabbing his first win of 2015.
Altuve and Valbuena went 7-10 combined with six runs to pace the Houston offense.
On a night with little positives for San Diego, Will Myers and Yangervis Solarte continued their recent success contributing 4 of the Padres six hits on the evening.
Although it is early, the Padres recent slide has to be a little worrisome considering the bullpen had been considered a strength of the team coming into the season.
Over the last 7 innings the bullpen has given up 15 earned runs and their season ERA sits at 4.98 as opposed to 2.73 a season ago.
It’s a long season so don’t let the April struggles get to you, sitting at 11-11 the Padres are still having a better opening month than the teams we’ve seen in the past.
The beautiful thing about baseball is that there is always another game tomorrow, Andrew Cashner (1-3 2.63) will take on Dallas Keuchel (2-0 0.62) as the Padres hope to avoid the sweep at the hands of the AL West leading Houston Astros.
