Garrett Richards withstood allowing two runs early, and threw seven strong innings, relying on home runs from Mike Trout and Albert Pujols behind him to push the Los Angeles Angels to victory over the Tampa Bay Rays 6-2 on Thursday night in south Florida.
With his ninth inning home run, Pujols — with 537 career bombs — passed Mickey Mantle for 16th place on the all-time home run list, as well.
Richards got in trouble in the bottom of the second inning, when Steven Souza Jr.’s two-run home run gave the Rays an early lead.
For a while, Rays’ starter Alex Colome looked like the 2-0 lead was going to hold up in Tampa, but the Angels eventually got to him in the sixth inning, when Trout hit his solo homer to get the Angels on the board.
Then, in the seventh, off former Angels reliever Kevin Jepsen, the flood gates opened for Los Angeles, and they pushed across three runs in the frame to take a 4-2 lead.
Highlighted by a Trout double off Brad Boxberger, all three runs were charged to Jepsen (1-4), who took the loss on the night after blowing his third save as a set-up man for the Rays.
Richards (6-4), meanwhile, cruised through the seventh and ended up allowing just the two-run home run, four hits, and a walk, while striking out seven Rays’ batters.
For good measure, Albert Pujols’ two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning extended the Angels’ lead to 6-2, and Huston Street finished the game off to give the Halos — now 30-30 on the year — the victory.
