RECAP: Angels 6, Athletics 3

The Los Angeles Angels relied on the bullpen to hold on to a lead late, Mike Trout slugged a home run and drove in three runs, Erick Aybar hit a two-run single, and Johnny Giavotella went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run to lead the Halos to a 6-3 win Wednesday night in Oakland.

The Angels got on the board first in the top of the first, when Aybar’s line drive single to center field scored Kole Calhoun and Trout to give the Halos an early 2-0 cushion off Athletics’ starter Jesse Hahn.

The Angels got another run in the top of the third when Trout hit a solo homer to left center field, his fifth long ball of the young season.

The A’s fought back to eventually tie the game at 3, though. First, Stephen Vogt singled off Angels’ starter Matt Shoemaker in the fourth inning to score Marcus Semien and make the game 3-1 in favor of Los Angeles.

Then, the A’s knocked Shoemaker out of the game in the sixth when Ike Davis hit a two-out double to score Semien and close the gap to 3-2 in favor of the Angels.

The next batter, Josh Reddick, singled off Angels deliver Cesar Ramos to score Davis and tie the game at 3-3 after six full innings.

That single closed the book on Angels’ starter Shoemaker, too, who tossed 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits and a walk against just three strikeouts, throwing 53 strikes on 84 pitches.

In the top of the seventh, the Angels put the game away for good with three more runs, started off by Giavotella’s single to score Matt Joyce and give Los Angeles a 4-3 lead. Then, Trout continued his hot day with a two-run double to extend the lead to 6-3.

That was all she wrote for the Angels bullpen, who tossed 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and striking out four, while giving up no walks and no runs.

Fernando Salas (1-1) earned the win in relief, and Huston Street earned his eighth save of the season.

The Angels finish the series tomorrow afternoon in Oakland, and then stay in the Bay Area with three games against the San Francisco Giants this weekend.
