RECAP: Angels 5, Rockies 2

C.J. Wilson allowed two runs on just five hits in eight innings, and Johnny Giavotella and Matt Joyce were in the middle of all the Angels’ offensive production tonight, as the Halos beat the slumping Colorado Rockies 5-2 Tuesday in Anaheim.

The Rockies struck first off Angels starter C.J. Wilson in the top of the third when, amid swirling trade rumors, Troy Tulowitzki knocked a sacrifice fly to put the Angels down one run.

In the fourth, the Rockies scored again, thanks to doubles from Justin Morneau and then Corey Dickerson to make it a 2-0 game for their starting pitcher, Kyle Kendrick, who came into the evening struggling mightily on the mound.

Kendrick looked good early, but the Angels finally got to him in the fourth. After singles by Erick Aybar and Johnny Giavotella, Matt Joyce drove in a run on a ground out, and Carlos Perez drove in another on a single to tie the game at two apiece after four innings.

The struggling Angels offense hit a new low tonight as the game remained tied heading to the eighth inning; Kendrick, who entered the game 1-4 with an 8.73 ERA and ten home runs allowed in six starts tossed seven innings of eight-hit ball, walking none and striking out five Angels hitters.

However, Angels starter Wilson matched Kendrick frame for frame in what became an unlikely pitchers’ duel.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Angels got going at the plate. Albert Pujols hit a single and then stole second, as Erick Aybar walked to put two Halos on with just one out against Rockies reliever Rafael Betancourt.

Giavotella came up and singled to right field, scoring Pujols and finally breaking the tie, putting the Angels ahead by a run. Joyce then doubled to bring home two more runs and break the game open off Betancourt, making it 5-2 Angels with a three run eighth.

That brought Huston Street in to close the game, and ended the day for Wilson, who allowed five hits and just one walk in eight innings, striking out six and throwing 111 pitches (70 strikes). Street slammed the door in the ninth, and the Angels won 5-2.

The Angels and Rockies will face off again tomorrow night at 7:05 pm PT for the second – and final – game of their two-game mid-week series. The Angels will then hit the road, traveling to Baltimore for three against the Orioles beginning Friday night.
