Taking a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cleveland Indians gave up three runs, thanks in part to two wild pitches by closer Cody Allen, and the host Los Angeles Angels won 4-3 on a walk-off wild pitch that scored Taylor Featherston on Wednesday afternoon.
The Indians jumped on the board first with a Ryan Raburn RBI single in the fourth inning, but Kole Calhoun quickly answered for the Angels with his solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to make the game 1-1.
The game would tip in the Indians’ favor as they scored runs on solo home runs in both the sixth and seventh innings off Angels’ starter Hector Santiago, with Raburn and Jose Ramirez doing the damage.
However, despite being down 3-1 entering the ninth inning, the Angels did some damage, putting up three runs in the frame to win the walk-off at Angel Stadium.
Despite the Indians getting two very quick outs to start off the frame, Cody Allen threw two wild pitches in the inning, and thanks to a 2-RBI single from C.J. Cron — and then one of the wild pitches, which would bring home game-winning run Taylor Featherston — the Angels pulled a victory from the jaws of defeat.
Santiago was good for the Angels on this day, though he got a no-decision in the game. He ended up going six innings, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out seven hitters.
Cam Bedrosian got the win in relief for the Angels, who are now 57-50 on the season and fighting with the Houston Astros for the lead in the competitive American League West.
