Matt Shoemaker took a one hitter into the eighth inning, and the Los Angeles Angels did on Thursday afternoon what the opposing Detroit Tigers did to them on Wednesday night — toss a shutout — in a 2-0 Angels’ victory at Comerica Park in the getaway day contest.
The Angels started off the scoring on Thursday with a very important run in the top of the sixth inning, when Albert Pujols hit an RBI single off Tigers’ starter Randy Wolf that scored Kole Calhoun, making the game 1-0 — a score that would hold for most of the game.
Shoemaker was brilliant all game, allowing just a hit and a walk in 7.1 innings pitched, while striking out five batters in the process. He threw 57 of his 95 pitches for strikes, and was lifted in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 1-0 game in favor of reliever Joe Smith.
Smith tossed two thirds of an inning, and despite giving up a triple, worked out of his own jam, and kept Shoemaker’s shutout intact for closer Huston Street.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Angels got an insurance run when Shane Victorino drove in Pujols with a sacrifice fly that made the game 2-0 for Street to close things out.
Street shut down the game with two strikeouts in the ninth for his 31st save of the season.
