The Oakland Athletics blew open a close game late, and defeated Tyson Ross and the San Diego Padres 9-1 on Monday night at Petco Park in downtown San Diego.
The A’s got on the board first in the top of the third inning, when they scored three runs on three RBI singles by Josh Reddick, Stephen Vogt, and Brett Lawrie, to give their starter Jesse Hahn a 3-0 cushion.
The Padres were able to push back a bit, though, when Will Venable doubled home Alexi Amarista in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 3-1 game. Venable’s double came after he appeared to be hit by a pitch during the at-bat, but after a replay review, it was determined he was not hit, and he returned to the plate, only to double.
That one run was all the Padres could muster on Monday, though, as A’s starter Jesse Hahn shut down the Friars on the first day of interim manager Dave Roberts‘ tenure, after Bud Black was fired earlier in the afternoon in San Diego.
Hahn threw 6.2 innings for Oakland, allowing just three hits and two walks, while striking out four Padres, on 94 pitches (59 strikes).
The A’s were able to push across a run in the fifth off Tyson Ross to make it a 4-1 game, and after five innings, Ross was done for the day.
Ross didn’t have his best stuff, allowing seven hits and five walks in five innings, striking out six Athletics’ hitters, but only throwing 63 of his 110 pitches for strikes in the process.
The A’s would blow the game open with a five-run eighth inning off Padres’ reliever Cory Mazzoni, highlighted by a Stephen Vogt grand slam to make it a 9-1 affair.
The Padres (32-34) will face Oakland again tomorrow at Petco Park, before traveling up to the Bay Area for two more games with the A’s at O.Co Coliseum.
