The Los Angeles Angels never really got it going Tuesday night despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, and after Jered Weaver allowed five runs in the bottom half of the inning, that was all she wrote for the Halos, who lost 6-2 to the Oakland Athletics in northern California.
The Angels scored their two runs on a David Freese single which plated Kole Calhoun and Albert Pujols off A’s starter Sonny Gray, and the 2-0 lead after one half inning off a good starter certainly should have been a good sign.
However, in the bottom of the first, the A’s exploded for five runs – all with two outs – off Weaver.
Josh Reddick singled home Marcus Semien and Stephen Vogt with the bases loaded, and then Brett Lawrie hit a three-run home run off Weaver to make the game 5-2.
Interestingly, neither team would score again until the bottom of the sixth, when Reddick took a Weaver fastball over the center field fence to make the game 6-2 in favor of the A’s.
The two teams combined for only 13 hits (just six by the Angels, whose anemic offense has been an issue of late), and just two combined walks made the game a two-hour, six-minute affair.
Weaver (0-3) went seven innings, allowing the six runs on six hits with no walks and just one strikeout, while Gray threw a gem for the A’s, going eight innings and earning a win while allowing six hits and one walk against six strikeouts.
The Angels are now 9-11, and they will next see the A’s tomorrow to try and gain ground against their AL West rival at the O.co Coliseum.
