Rams Week 1 Recap

Los Angeles Rams football is back. Thankfully, the Rams picked up where they left off. In 2018, the Rams averaged 30 points a game. Sunday in Carolina, they beat the Panthers 30-27. If the trend of averaging 30 points per game continues this year, expect the Rams to go right back to the playoffs, and make another push for the Super Bowl. As for Week 1, the Los Angeles defense looked phenomenal, while the offense made some timely plays. There were some mistakes, but that is to be expected with a majority of the starters did not play in the preseason.

Offensively, this was not the best performance.  Jared Goff threw for 186 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Todd Gurley totaled 97 yards in the game.  Brandin Cooks had two receptions for 39 yards. Robert Woods enjoyed a nice game with eight receptions for 70 yards. While Todd Gurley’s health was a storyline coming into this game, another player coming off of an injury made his mark on this game. With his first game back since tearing his ACL last year, Cooper Kupp had seven receptions for 46 yards. If Kupp can remain healthy this year, the Rams offense will be as dangerous as it was last year. The key player for the Rams on offense though was Malcolm Brown. Brown rushed for two touchdowns, and 53 yards. Going forward, it will be interesting to see how Los Angeles split the playing time with Brown and Gurley.

As for the defense, the Los Angeles offseason moves look fantastic. Clay Matthews recorded his first sack in a Rams uniform. Eric Weddle also looked good. While he was on the field, the Los Angeles defense held the Panthers in check. Unfortunately, Weddle sustained a head injury during the game, sending him into concussion protocol. Dante Fowler Jr. broke through with a couple of sacks. Last, but not least, Cory Littleton picked off Cam Newton with just under six minutes left in the game. If the Rams defense can play up to that next week against the Saints, they have a good chance to improve to 2-0.

As for next week, the offense will have to step up. The Rams home opener will be a challenge. Los Angeles lost in the regular season to the Saints last year, and their win in the playoffs against the Saints is sadly surrounded by controversy. If the Rams knock off the Saints next week, they will without a doubt, silence some of their critics this year.
