Rams trade for #1 pick
- Updated: April 15, 2016
After a quiet offseason, the Los Angeles Rams made its blockbuster move of 2016 by getting the first overall pick in the 2016 draft from the Tennessee Titans. The Rams will have to give up four picks in this year’s draft (14, 43, 45, and 76) as well as the first and third round picks in next year’s draft.
The Rams will now be able to choose the face who will usher in the new era in Los Angeles. The team is expected to choose either between Carson Wentz of North Dakota St or Jared Goff of Cal.
This was a move brought on after a decades-long failure to solidify itself at the position since the departure of Marc Bulger. Bulger was the last Rams quarterback to finish top 10 in total QBR rating in 2006. Since Bulger’s decline, no Rams quarterback has finished in the top 20.
In the battle between Wentz and Goff it will come down whose skills are more refined to fit the Rams offense and whether experience beats potential. Wentz has a solid frame and a great arm. But will that trump Goff’s experience of playing in the Pac-12 and having a monster senior season where he threw 43 touchdowns with 13 interceptions.
The Rams have two weeks to decide before the draft who will be the quarterback of the future in Los Angeles.
