Ralph Lawler’s Law

“First to one-hundred wins, it’s the law” whether it ’s good or bad for the Los Angeles Clippers, that’s what he says.

For thirty-six years Clipper fans have had one voice that can be called their own, Ralph Lawler. Ralph joined the Clippers in 1978 when the team had just relocated from Buffalo to San Diego. He has been with the team through the bad, awful and downright embarrassing. Four playoff appearances in a row, championship hopes on the horizon and Lawler decides that this 2014-2015 season might be his last as the voice of the Los Angeles Clippers.

After last season, rumors began to spread among the Clipper faithful that Lawler would never return to broadcast for the Clippers. Upon hearing such rumors, Lawler stated that he would remain with the team for one more year as to stay with them through their transition out of the Donald Sterling era.

Age-wise Clippers fans are lucky Lawler stuck around for as long as he has, as Lawler is currently 76 years of age. For those of you that follow him on Twitter, you know that Ralph likes to spend much of his offseason and free-time with his wife Jo at their home in Bend, Oregon and for a man of his age to continue to return to the busy streets of Los Angeles every NBA season is very commendable. Yet still, you have to think the timing of his retirement is a little ironic.

Even when the team was the laughing-stock of professional sports, Clippers fans like myself would get a little cheered up just hearing a “Bingo” from Lawler as a Clipper swished home a three. It was that excitement in his voice when the Clippers had no chance of winning the game or making the playoffs that should make any Clipper fan upset that age has caught up with Lawler. Now that this team finally has their shot, Ralph decides he just has a short time left before he lays his microphone down.

I’ll be the first to say, if calling Shelly Sterling “Clippers Number One Fan” helps get Donald out of the owner’s box it was worth it. If “Clipper Darrell” wants to jump and shout so loud in his half-red-half blue suit that I can hear him through my TV speakers all the way out here in Lincoln, Nebraska, I have no problem with that. Mostly because I remember when nobody would want to be called this teams number one fan, and Clipper Darrell didn’t have much to cheer about. But, if there is one true fan that I want this team to win the title for, it’s Ralph Lawler. Oh me, Oh my we’re going to miss you on the microphone every game night, Ralph.
