“Luc,” his wife whispered while nudging him.
“Huh?”
“You’re up. Bob just announced you.”
“Oh right!” he said, quickly getting up on stage and getting behind the podium. He was daydreaming about his career and the quest and almost missed the signal for him to do his speech. He looked around while trying to unglue the genuine smile he had on his face so he could properly speak but his smile couldn’t be unglued. It was impossible to do. He felt such an immense sense of pride and accomplishment and having all these people here for him, including Gretzky and Lemieux was such an honor.
He was truly blessed. Blessed to have wonderful parents, and a wonderful wife and family. Blessed to have played in the NHL and have an amazing career, win the Stanley Cup and get into the Hall of Fame. Blessed to have been drafted by the Los Angeles King and play for them for most of his career and blessed to be still working for them to this very day. He was blessed by everyone that helped him get to where he is now, from Rogie Vachon to Marcel Dionne to Wayne Gretzky, from the City of Montreal growing up to the home of his heart in Los Angeles to Hockeytown in Detroit and back to Hockeywood in LA. Blessed to have the Kings honor him by making a statue of him in tribute but most of all, he was blessed to have been given another opportunity to help deliver a Stanley Cup to Los Angeles and complete the quest in full … twice! The 18-year-old version of him would’ve been proud to know that 31 years later, he was still a member of the Los Angeles Kings and this still made him happy. Now if only he could tell that 18-year-old to work harder on his skating skills?
