Pittsburgh Pirates Drop Dodgers 5-1

Dodgers

The Dodgers suffered a frustrating defeat on Friday, going silent at the plate in a 5-1 loss vs Pittsburgh.

The Pirates put up a three spot in the top of the first inning on RBIs from Andrew McCutchen, David Freese, and Jordy Mercer. Dodgers’ starter Ross Stripling would eventually settle down.

LA’s lone run came in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out RBI single by Howie Kendrick. The Dodgers left ten men on base when it was all said and done.

The Pirates added some insurance in the top of the third on Andrew McCutchen’s 16th bomb of the season, a solo shot. Jordy Mercer tacked on another for Pittsburgh in the top of the seventh when he went deep for the seventh time this season.

Ross Stripling got roughed up for five earned but showed some grit by grinding through seven innings despite not having his best stuff. He would eventually take the loss (3-4) but spared the LA bullpen some work, with Jesse Chavez tossing the only two scoreless frames needed to bridge the gap between the seventh and the ninth.

The Pirates went on to win by a final score of 5-1. The Dodgers are one game back of the first place Giants in the NL West.
