Yesterday at Citizens Bank Park the Philadelphia Phillies (5-5) were able to win the series against the San Diego Padres (3-7) 3-0 in a shutout.
Phillies starting pitcher Vince Velasquez (2-0, 0.00 ERA) W [9.0 IP, 3 Hits, 16 K’s,] 0 BB) made his home debut in an incredible fashion. Pitching a complete game shutout to solidify his early season dominance.
Padres starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz (1-1, 3.27 ERA) L [6.0 IP, 3 Hits, 8 K’s, 3 BB, 2 ER] had a good start as well. Just not as good as Velasquez.
Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard (1-2, 2 RBI) hit a solo shot home run to left center field as Philadelphia went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Later on in the bottom of the sixth, Howard hit a sacrifice fly to center field as outfielder Odubel Herrera scored.
With a 2-0 lead the Phillies would score one last run. Vince Velasquez was at bat as Padres reliever Carlos Villanueva threw a wild pitch. Phillies second baseman Andres Blanco scored as a result giving Philadelphia the 3-0 lead an eventual win.
Tonight at 7:40 PM PT the San Diego Padres (3-7) will host the Arizona Diamondbacks (3-7). Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke (0-2, 9.90 ERA) will face Padres ace James Shields (0-2, 4.85 ERA) in game one.
