The Los Angeles Lakers fell to the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night, 113-92. Jordan Clarkson flirted with a triple-double in the blowout loss.

After finishing 2-3 on their road trip, the Los Angeles Lakers are back in Staples Center as they faced Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans on a three-game home stand. The last time the Lakers faced the Pelicans, Kobe Bryant suffered a rotator cuff tear in his right shoulder that eventually ended his season.

Both teams got off to hot starts, but the Lakers made 7 out of 8 field goal attempts to lead 14-11 in the early going. Jordan Clarkson posted 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and complemented Tarik Black who scored 10 points to give the Lakers a 31-29 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Pelicans continued their hot shooting against a poor Lakers defense to lead 45-37 halfway through the second quarter. The Lakers defense was nonexistent as Anthony Davis and Tyreke Evans combined for 22 points to help the Pelicans establish a 60-49 lead into the locker room.

The Pelicans picked up where they left off in the third quarter, extending their lead to as much as 20 over an abysmal Lakers defense. The Pelicans built a 90-70 lead entering the fourth quarter. The Lakers did not offer much resistance in the final quarter as they fell to the Pelicans, 113-92.

The Lakers shot 45% from the field and 32% from beyond the arc. Jordan Clarkson finished three rebounds shy of a triple-double, posting 18 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. Tarik Black had 16 points, mostly coming off dunks. Jordan Hill scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench.

Anthony Davis led the Pelicans with 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four blocks. Tyreke Evans scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Norris Cole scored 17 off the bench.

With tonight’s loss, the Lakers fall to a 21-54 record – two games ahead of the Orlando Magic for the #4 spot in the upcoming draft. The Lakers need to land at least a top-5 pick in the lottery – anything outside the top-5 will go to the Sixers. The last eight games of the season will be interesting for the Lakers as they continue to be competitive and win crucial games, despite their uncertain draft position.

The Lakers will face the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night, 7:30PM PST.
