Pedro Martinez Elected Into Hall Of Fame
- Updated: January 6, 2015
Former Dodger, Pedro Martinez has been elected into the Hall Of Fame. He was joined by three others, Randy Johnson, John Smoltz, and Craig Biggio.
Pedro Martinez is a three-time Cy Young winner. He appeared on 500 ballots (91.1 percent) and was 219-100. He struck out 3,154, led the major leagues in ERA five times, and in 2004 helped the Boston Red Sox to their first World Series title in 86 years.
Martinez also became the second player from the Dominican Republic elected to Cooperstown, joining Juan Marichal (1983).
ESPN.com news services reports the following:
“So many people in the Dominican Republic and so many people all over the world got to know me as a player but not as a person,” Martinez said during an interview with MLB Network. “What I mean to the Dominican Republic — it was a great honor to just have the opportunity to go on the first ballot.”
Below is a breakdown of the votes collected for each player, courtesy of ESPN.com and Baseball Writers’ Association of America:
Martinez, Johnson and Smoltz were shoe-ins for their induction, making it on their first try. Biggie made it in after his third try due to his falling short by two votes last year.
Congratulations to Pedro!
