Padres Trade Closer Craig Kimbrel To Red Sox

The San Diego Padres have agreed to terms with the Boston Red Sox to a trade. According to MLB.com reporter Corey Brock, the Padres traded closer Craig Kimbrel for four minor league prospects.

The prospects that are headed to the Padres minor league farm system are as follows. Outfielder Manuel Margot, shortstop Javier Guerra, pitcher Logan Allen and lastly infielder Carlos Asuaje.

These players were all for an exchange for Craig Kimbrel who is only 27 and earned 39 out of 43 attemped saves. His ERA this past season was (2.58) in 61 total games.

This does come to be somewhat as a surprise to me. I wouldn’t of expected the Padres to trade away such a valuable player but they are set on their current rebuild.

Relief pitcher Joaquin Benoit was traded to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for prospects Enyel De Los Santos and infielder Nelson Ward.

The Padres also received the news that both impact players pitcher Ian Kennedy and outfielder Justin Upton rejected the one-year 15.8 million dollar qualifying offer for the 2016 season.

If they were to lose Upton and Kennedy to other teams then the rebuild in San Diego will be shaping up how General Manager A.J. Preller and the organization would like to see.
