The Padres Still Need An Infielder

(Image via Twitter)

Here’s your (friendly) reminder that the San Diego Padres still need a damn middle infielder, because Clint Barmes, Alexi Amarista, Jedd Gyorko, and whatever else they’re limpin’ to the barn with aren’t gonna get it done in light of how serious general manager A.J. Preller is about making moves and winning games.

Sure, the club has reunited the Upton brothers in a very deep outfield that’ll help the Friars hit baseballs better this summer than they did last summer. And Upton mania came to San Diego in a massive haul that brought Craig Kimbrel into the closer’s role, which made a deep bullpen deeper and —

Wait. The bullpen! That’s the ticket.

You see, the Padres have at least two big league quality relievers in AAA El Paso right now – Brandon Maurer and Kevin Quackenbush – plus another few that can likely help a big league club at some point, in some way, in Leonel Campos, Scott Elbert, Robbie Erlin, and Marcos Mateo.

Hmmm. Seems like we know what the Padres have to offer some team looking to add bullpen help in exchange for an infielder! And luckily, they’ve got the quality arms to do it, without giving up a big leaguer in the process.

Quackenbush and Maurer would be important bullpen pieces on, like, at least 25 other big league clubs (maybe 29), and they’ve been banished to El Paso instead of enjoying the NL West. No offense, west Texans, but that’s… brutal.

The New York Mets may have reliever problems.

The Detroit Tigers are still looking for bullpen help, especially with news of Joe Nathan getting injured.

The Toronto Blue Jays bullpen is kinda sorta maybe a little iffy.

There are teams out there that will need some bullpen help (and really, don’t we all need a reliever now and then?), and the Padres are going to find a suitor. Especially since Preller isn’t done making deals yet.

Oh boy.
