The deal comes at an interesting time as both Joaquin Benoit, and star closer Craig Kimbrel were both traded to American league teams. Thus making relief pitching a priority to San Diego.
This past 2015 season, Villanueva was (4-3, 2.95 ERA) and had (55) strikeout and allowed (55) hits. Having pitched relief innings in the National League Central division will come in handy.
As the Arizona Diamondbacks, San Francisco Giants, and Los Angeles Dodgers have been busy, the San Diego Padres have made significant moves this offseason so far.
The Padres have far more moves to make before the offseason is done. They will need to try to improve as the NL West continues to improve.
