Although it was a sold out crowd at Petco Park, the San Diego Padres weren’t able to contain Charlie Morton and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The game ended 5-2.
Tyson Ross got the start for the Padres and he labored early. Ross allowed runs in both the first inning, and again in the second, and then got his stuff together and settled down. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits in six innings.
Morton allowed one earned run throughout the course of seven innings. He also put up a run, allowed three hits, with one walk, and two strikeouts. He was also responsible for 16 groundball outs.
The Pirates managed to get an unearned run in the first inning when an error by Will Middlebrooks met with Starling Marte.
The game was tied at the fourth inning thanks to Pedro Alvarez‘s throwing error. This helped Matt Kemp to score on a ball hit by the Pirates’ Cory Spangenberg.
The Padres and Pirates will continue their series tomorrow night at 6:10 p.m. PST
