Andrew Cashner was looking for a vintage performance on “Way Back Wednesday” at Petco Park, and he delivered yet another quality start at home, but Dallas Keuchel was even better for Houston as the Astros finished the three game sweep of the Padres. Just last week the Padres were looking good at 10-5, but the loss today drops the Padres under .500 at 11-12.
The game got off to a good start for the Padres. In the bottom of the first Wil Myers got another leadoff base hit , and Matt Kemp drove him in with a triple, giving the Padres a quick 1-0 lead. Cashner dazzled in both the first and second, striking out the side each inning. But after the second inning the Astros dominated. Jake Marisnick ended the Cashner’s string of strikeouts in the top of the third with a grounder that just popped over Will Middlebrooks and into left field for a double. Marisnick would later tie the game on a Jose Altuve sacrifice fly. The score remained 1-1 until Colby Rasmus hit a two run home run in the fourth inning, giving the Astros a 3-1 lead and all the runs they would need to finish of the sweep in San Diego.
Andrew Cashner went 7 innings striking out 10, and gave up 2 earned runs. This was his 21st consecutive home start in which he gave fewer than 2 earned runs, which is a new major league record. Unfortunately for Cashner, he was outdueled by his pitching counterpart Dallas Keuchel. Keuchel continued his hot start to the 2015 season by only allowing 3 hits and 1 run through 8 innings and recording 4 strikeouts for the Astros.
The bullpen woes continued for the Padres in a rough 9th inning. Catcher Will Nieves had trouble catching Craig Kimbrel‘s curveball and the Astros didn’t have trouble getting on base against Kimbrel. The result was 3 runs given up in only a third of an inning for Kimbrel. Wil Myers scored a consolation run in the bottom of the 9th make it 7-2, but the Padres wouldn’t get closer than that.
After losing 7 of 8, the Padres have a much needed day off tomorrow, before their homestand continues on Friday against the Colorado Rockies. Eddie Butler and Ian Kennedy are the probable starters.
