After the Padres suffered a tough 6-5 loss on Tuesday night, they were hoping for a bounce back on Wednesday night with Tyson Ross on the mound. Unfortunately that didn’t happen.
The Braves got to Tyson Ross early, scoring 2 runs in the 2nd innings. Ross finished the game with 5 strike outs, 3 earned runs, 2 walks, and 9 hits given up. Technically a quality start, but Ross won’t be happy with the end result, or the number of baserunners he allowed.
Things got a little bit interesting with 2 outs in the top of the 3rd as Cory Spangenberg legged out a double and Justin Upton was hit by a pitch. Upton was visibly unhappy about being hit, but cooler heads prevailed. Yonder Alonso then loaded the bases by drawing a 5 pitch walk, an at bat in which the home plate umpire displayed a rather oddly shaped strike zone. Will Middlebrooks, in the midst of a resurgence after some early season struggles, lined out directly to former Padre Cameron Maybin in center field and ended the Padres hopes of an early rally.
Tyson Ross struggled again in the bottom of the 3rd, giving up 2 hits and a walk to load the bases before recording an out. He did induce a double play before giving up another walk and recording a strikeout to limit the damage to 1 run, and keep the Padres within 3.
In the top of the 4th Ross helped his own cause by reaching base on a bunt and advancing to 2nd on a wild throw to first by A.J. Pierzynski. Ross made it home on a Cory Spangenberg double to left field to make the score 3-1. Starting pitcher Williams Perez and the struggling Braves bullpen kept San Diego from getting any closer.
Shawn Kelley relieved Tyson Ross in the 7th inning and gave up a blooper into shallow center and a bunt that rolled along the foul line but stayed fair. Jace Peterson, another former Padre, drew a one out walk to load the bases for Cameron Maybin, who singled in the 4th run of the game for Atlanta. Kelley didn’t face another batter as Frank Garces came in and forced Freddie Freeman to fly out to left field, shallow enough for Justin Upton’s throw to convince the runner at the 3rd to turn around. Another fly out to left field ended the inning, and there were no runs scored after that point.
After a nice win streak and an easy 5-0 lead midway through the game on Tuesday, the Padres have been outscored 10-1 and have lost 2 games in a row. They’ll look to salvage a 2-2 split in Atlanta tomorrow afternoon, before coming back to San Diego for a big 3 game series against the Dodgers this weekend. The probable pitchers for the series finale against the Braves are Andrew Cashner and Julio Teheran.
Note: Bud Black confirmed during the postgame press conference that Wil Myers will be activated and added to the Padres 25 game roster on Thursday.
