Padres Keep Jon Lester Winless, Beat Cubs 5-2

Jon Lester was the big name to change addresses this winter and looked to gain his first win in a Cubs uniform this afternoon. The San Diego Padres had other plans as they beat the Cubs 5-2 this afternoon.

Andrew Cashner got the start for the Padres. He pitched 6 innings allowing 5 hits and 0 earned runs while striking out 5. He did walk 2 batters on his way to his first win of the year.

Jon Lester got the start for the Cubs. He pitched 5.1 innings allowing 6 hits and 3 runs while striking out 4. He walked 2 batters as well and dropped to 0-2 on the year.

The Cubs jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning. Jorge Soler hit an RBI single to center that brought in Dexter Fowler to give them the early 1-0 lead. Chris Coghlan followed with a single to right field and brought in Soler and the Cubs held a 2-0 advantage heading into the 2nd inning.

In the second inning Will Middlebrooks hit a two run shot to left center that brought in Derek Norris. His bomb tied the game at 2 apiece.

Will Venable hit a RBI single to center that brought in Matt Kemp. In the 7th inning Yangervis Solarte hit his first home run of the year, a two run shot to right that brought in Wil Myers.

Joaquin Benoit came on in the 9th inning and recorded his save of the season.

The Padres will head to Colorado for game one of their series tomorrow night.
