According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports the San Diego Padres have signed former Tampa Bay Rays first basemen James Loney to a minor league deal.

Loney tweeted his excitement about the deal.

Loney is a former first round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2002 MLB Draft. He spent 7 years with the Dodgers before joining the Boston Red Sox for a year followed by the Rays for three seasons.

Last year with the Rays Loney hit .280 while playing in 104 games. He had 101 hits to go along with 16 doubles. Loney will start the year in the Triple-A but will most likely get called up at some point this year.
