Padres Get Swept By Giants

On Tuesday afternoon, the Padres lost to the Giants by the score of 3-2. San Diego pitched well, but the offense was only able to score two runs. With the loss on Tuesday, San Diego was winless during their five-game homestand. The Padres sent left-hander Clayton Richard to the mound. Richard recorded a quality start by allowing two earned runs over five innings of work. Reliever Jordan Lyles came on to pitch in the sixth and threw two scoreless innings. Reliever Robert Stock pitched a scoreless eighth. San Diego’s bullpen remained strong as Kirby Yates was able to pitch a scoreless ninth. The Padres relinquished the game in extras once again, as reliever Phil Maton allowed a run in the tenth.

Offensively, San Diego had a double from first baseman Eric Hosmer, which drove in left fielder Wil Myers in the first. San Diego would not score again until the eighth when Center fielder Manuel Margot drove in a run via a fielder’s choice. San Diego finished the month of July with five wins. Having only five wins in a month is no recipe for success. Perhaps a bigger story for the Padres was the decision to stand pat at the trade deadline. San Diego will hold on to their coveted relievers for now.

Up next for San Diego, the Padres will enjoy an off day on Wednesday. The Padres will resume play on Thursday, as they will face the Chicago Cubs in a four-game series at Wrigley Field. In the series opener, San Diego will send to the mound left-hander Robbie Erlin, who is 1-3 this season, with a 3.47 earned run average.
