Padres Get Swept By D-backs

On Sunday afternoon the Padres lost 5-4 to the Diamondbacks. San Diego was swept by Arizona this weekend, and as a result, the Padres have now lost five straight games. Once again, the starting pitching was the downfall of the Padres as left-hander Joey Lucchesi allowed five earned runs over four and one-third innings pitched. No starting pitcher for San Diego had a quality start in this series. The bullpen, however, was able to bounce back as they did not allow a run in the game. Reliever Jordan Lyles pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings. Lyles was followed by right-hander Robert Stock, who pitched two scoreless innings. Phil Maton was responsible for the ninth and was able to throw a scoreless inning.
The Padres offense could not overcome the D-backs. Some untimely hitting, as well as bad breaks, hurt San Diego in the game. The offense that was provided, was encouraging to see. Left fielder Wil Myers continued to hit well as he collected two hits, and drove in a pair of runs. Catcher Aj Ellis also had two hits and knocked in a run. Shortstop Freddy Galvis nearly hit a two-run home run, but the ball bounced off the top of the wall, resulting in a double, and only one run coming around to score.
Sunday afternoon was not all bad for San Diego, as all-time great closer, Trevor Hoffman was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Hoffman became the third Padres player to be inducted, joining Dave Winfield and Tony Gwynn as the Padres representatives.
Up next for San Diego, the Padres will conclude the homestand with a two-game series against the San Francisco Giants. San Diego will try to snap a five-game losing streak, as they will send to the mound Eric Lauer. Lauer is 5-8 this season with a 5.29 earned run average.
