Padres Drop Series Opener To D-Backs

On Thursday night, the Padres lost the first game of a four-game series to Arizona. As a result of the loss, San Diego has now dropped four consecutive games. Rookie starting pitcher Jacob Nix failed to make it out of the first inning, as he allowed five earned runs. The bullpen pitched their hearts out. In total, the San Diego bullpen threw eight and one-third innings while holding the D-backs to five runs. Due to the number of innings the bullpen threw, some relievers will not be available for Friday night.

As for the offense, they were held in check for a large portion of the game. The only run San Diego could force home came from a Hunter Renfroe solo home run. The current lineup needs some additions as San Diego continues to leave men in scoring position. Obviously, the Padres have struggled against Arizona this season. Currently, on the season, San Diego is 3-8 against Arizona, and the D-backs have a four-game winning streak at Petco Park.

The young offensive talent the Padres have in the minor leagues may not showcase their abilities until later next month. San Diego’s triple-A affiliate is in a playoff race. Expect those players to get a chance after the minor league season has come to an end.
