Padres Drop 6th Straight In Extras

On Monday evening, the Padres dropped their sixth straight game. San Diego lost to San Francisco 5-3 in twelve innings. Padres starting pitcher Eric Lauer threw five innings, giving up three earned runs, bringing his earned run average to 5.30. The bullpen picked up the remainder of the game from there on. Reliever Jose Castillo was impressive once again, pitching two scoreless innings.  Craig Stammen followed him, throwing a scoreless inning. San Diego’s closer Kirby Yates also threw two scoreless innings. Long relief man Matt Strahm pitched a scoreless eleventh. Unfortunately for the Padres, the Giants scored two earned runs off of Strahm in the twelfth.

San Diego’s offense was only able to score three runs. Center fielder Manuel Margot drove in a run via an error from the Giants outfield. Right fielder Hunter Renfroe hit a solo home run in the fifth. The last run the Padres were able to produce was a double from third baseman Christian Villanueva, as he knocked in a run. San Diego had a chance to walk the game off in the eleventh when they had runners at the corners with only one out. Catcher Austin Hedges attempted a squeeze bunt but failed to execute it, as the ball went back to the pitcher. Second baseman Carlos Asuaje followed with a strikeout.

Up next for San Diego, they will conclude their two-game series with the Giants on Tuesday afternoon. San Diego will send to the mound left-hander Clayton Richard, who is 7-10 this season. The bigger story for the Padres is the trade deadline. Multiple teams are interested in some of the Padres relievers, so there will be some decisions looming prior to the game.
